Have a Little Faith (Faith #1)
July 16, 2016goodreads.com |
Genre: Contemporary, Humour, UKYA
Plot: This story is about a teenage girl named Faith Ashby and the events that take place in her life (vague description, I know).
Opinion: This story was quite interesting. It was written in the format of a diary and I thought the entries were kept at a reasonable length.
The protagonist Faith Ashby has a strong personality. She's loud, feisty and violent. She also doesn't shy away from sarcasm. Though her cheeky comments may seem hilarious at times, they can also make her seem a little too rude. Maybe it's because I don't belong to a 'non religious Western family' but sometimes when Faith was talking to her parents (and sometimes her teachers) you would think she was talking to one of her mates!
I liked some of the other characters as well such as: Megan 'Megs' (her best friend), Ethan and Angharad.
The writing style was appealing. It was simple but not too simple and was also peppered with lovely English slang words that I found rather refreshing.
However, despite my fondness of this story, it was quite cliché. I would be lying if I said I did not read anything like this in my early teenage years. I'm just glad that the romance wasn't heavy handed (as Faith is only 14) but I do understand that this book is meant for a slightly younger audience (though sometimes I can act a little younger than my age).
It was hilarious in a lot of parts (although some phrases were repeated to the point where I was like "Yep. Uh huh. We know, we get it.").
Recommendation: I would definitely recommend this to Louise Rennison's books but I shan't speak ill of the late). It is also for people who love reading lovely British books with sassy female protagonists.
Rating: *** - Three stars out of five

I ADORE sassy female protagonists. I also adore sassy male protagonists. Basically I love people if they're sassy. (Also, I loved your synopsis for this one. "The events that take place in her life.") I'm not a huge fan of contemporary so I probably wouldn't pick this one up, but thanks for the review! It might be a good read for a cool winter's evening with a mug of hot chocolate?
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks! I want to branch out to other genres. I also appreciate how you have been checking out my book reviews (even though it might be quite tiring for you xD).
DeleteOoooh Faith Ashby sounds like a riot, I'd read this book just to see how she's portrayed with this loud, exuberant personality.

Hey there! Yeah, she's quite funny.
DeleteThanks for commenting! :)
Huh, sounds like an interesting book! Unfortunately, I struggle getting through cliche books, so if you thought that was the case, I'm guessing it's not for me.
ReplyDeleteHey! I also tagged you for a thing, if you're interested. :) http://semilegacy.blogspot.com/2016/07/bookshelf-tag-ii.html
It's very interesting, haha. A very light read.
DeleteAnd thanks for the tag. Definitely gonna do it! :P
Sassy is definitely good *nods* And I know what you mean about kids in books sometimes sounding like they're talking to mates. :p Sometimes I'm just like... "Enh... pipe down there, young one." (as though I am not just 18.)
ReplyDeleteNice review! And I sent you a tag, btw. Don't feel obligated, but if you want to, here's the link. :) https://thessalexa.blogspot.com/2016/07/power-of-words-tag.html

ReplyDeleteKeep it all clean, man. Well, if you really wanna curse, use minor swear words. And I mean the minorest of minor ones.
"Or what?" you ask in indignation.
"Or else."
