Divergent (Yeah, I know I'm late...)

August 23, 2016

Source
Author: Veronica Roth

Genre: YA, Dystopian

Plot: This book is written in the point of view of Beatrice Prior, a teenage girl living in a society arranged into five 'factions': Amity, Erudite, Candor, Abnegation and Dauntless.

Beatrice 'Tris' belongs to the faction Abnegation which values selflessness and she (and other young people from different factions) are only obliged to stay in their current factions until they are sixteen. When they are sixteen, a 'Choosing Ceremony' is held and then they are free to pick the faction they want to permanently live in. Of course, it is uncommon for a person to change factions.

Tris moves to a faction that is in complete contrast to her former one and from then on she encounters many trials and temptations.

Opinion: I liked the writing. It wasn't overly descriptive so it was fast paced and didn't seem to drag on unnecessarily. Veronica Roth used a lot of short sentences throughout the novel. Also, the dialogue was realistic.

The characters were interesting although I was forced to choose Tris as my favourite character because I didn't know much about the others. I appreciate how Veronica Roth did not completely change Tris by the end of the novel and kept some of her Abnegation traits.

"I look down, my cheeks warm. I shouldn't be gossiping anyway. Gossiping is self-indulgent."

The friends Tris made in her new faction were cool but I found them somewhat annoying sometimes.

Yes, there is a love interest (for those who haven't read it xD) but at least he isn't one of those pushy douchebags. I also appreciate the decent age gap.

Recommendation: For Hunger Games fans (although I personally prefer this 1st book to the 1st Hunger Games book). I also recommend this for teenagers and adults.

Content: Fairly clean language. There is some kissing. There is definitely violence.

Rating: **** - Four stars out of five.

I'm back and have finally finished the Divergent series (last month). So yeah, if you want to discuss it with me you can use the contact form or the comment section (I guess?). I won't be posting my reviews of Insurgent and Allegiant on my blog unless you want to see it.

Also, I have Goodreads now (I promised myself to make one after I have finished writing ten book reviews). So you can follow me or I can follow you. Make sure you leave your link. Yeahh...

  1. Hey Grace!
I'm Crystal from You're Just Right that I own with my friend Elle :)
I just found your blog and I really like it!

I really like the way you've formatted your book reviews, and that you have a "content" section in the reviews, I love it when reviews have that to let me know what's in a book before I read it and you did it really well!
I read divergent and it wasn't my cup of tea so I didn't read the rest of the series and buried myself in the 5000 other books I need to read XD

Look forward to digging through the rest of your blog :)

    1. Oh my gosh! Hey Crystal!

I'm glad you like my blog but I found it weird that I use different sized fonts for reviews and tags and regular posts. Absolutely all over the place! But I like it like that...? (why did you even include that, Grace?) xD

Oh, I wish I had loads of book that I need to bury myself in. But... the library will do *shrugs*

  2. Nice review! I liked but didn't love the Divergent series, and I agree, Four and Tris are a good couple. I think I liked Christina best in this book? Or maybe Will? I can't remember for sure. It's been a bit since I read it, lol

  3. I liked Four and Tris in the first book, but then Four got kinda annoying for me as time went on so yeah. Also, what did you think of the ending of Allegiant? And I also found I didn't really get attached to most of the other characters, which was weird for me. Anywho.

Keep it all clean, man. Well, if you really wanna curse, use minor swear words. And I mean the minorest of minor ones.

"Or what?" you ask in indignation.

"Or else."
