Author: Holly Bourne

Genre: UKYA, Mental Health, Contemporary

Blurb: All Evie wants is to be normal. She's almost off her meds and at a new college where no one knows her as the girl-who-went-nuts. She's even going to parties and making friends. There's only one thing to tick off her list...

But relationships are messy - especially relationships with teenage guys. They can make any girl feel like they're going mad. And if Evie can't even tell her new friends Amber and Lottie the truth about herself, how will she cope when she falls in love?

Opinion: This book was...wow...

You may or may not know this if you've heard of this book but Evie has anxiety and OCD. Despite having anxiety rather than OCD, I could relate to her quite a bit.

Moving on...

So my favourite character was basically Evie. It's pretty rare for me to like the main character the most (and not by default, too). I found her nice and somewhat relatable. She was foolish, but not the foolish foolish many female YA protagonists are. I'm just glad that she has some sense, too. Also, she wasn't dreary like some female protagonists. Sometimes the girl is super boring before she gets a boyfriend.

Lottie was the leader (also the smartest and prettiest though only academically) of The Spinster Club - the sort of feminist group where the girls talk about double standards and other issues. However, when it came to boys she was crazy foolish. She got played.

Amber was grand and actually quite funny and sensible but slightly witchy if you know what I mean. But then again, so was Lottie.

Jane and Joel were BLEEEH. And Jane acted so weird.

And don't get me started on Guy (yes, he's guy called Guy). That guy was funny sometimes but man, also so irritating. Also, he was smokin' weed everyday. Literally :/

Actual footage of Guy. It's really hard to find since he's a fictional character and stuff but you know me! ;)

I didn't really mind the writing but it was a little choppy I guess.

I think I'll check out more of Holly Bourne's books.

Recommendation: For younger readers (HaHaHa. As if! 'Not suitable for younger readers' was put on the back for a reason).

Content: Tons of swearing, kissing, innuendo, drinking.

Rating: *** 1/2 - 3 and a half stars out of five.

  1. Isn't that funny how it can be difficult to like the main character? I usually like that one side character who dies a horrible, tragic death halfway through and breaks my heart :/

Keep it all clean, man. Well, if you really wanna curse, use minor swear words. And I mean the minorest of minor ones.

"Or what?" you ask in indignation.

"Or else."
