Author: Maggie Stiefvater

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Fiction

Blurb: Every year, the Scorpio Races are run on the beaches of Skarmouth. Every year, the sea washes blood from the sand. To race the savage water horses can mean death, but the danger is irresistable.

When Puck enters the races to save her family, she is drawn to the mysterious Sean, the only person that is capable of taming the beasts.

Even if they stay together, can they stay alive?

A breathtaking ride that will make your heart race.

Opinion: First thing to mention, this took me a long time to finish. Don't get me wrong... it wasn't the book, it was me.

At first, I was confused about the whole capall/capaill thing because it's an Irish word. I got over it eventually.

Also, where the heck do the people come from? I imagined their accents as Irish at first and then Scottish and Welsh and also a mix of all three. Then back to Irish. Also there was some Irish slang, e.g. 'knacker'.

The characters were interesting all right, but I didn't feel much for them. Kate 'Puck' Connolly was a girl from a poor background and she had a short temper. Sean Kendrick was all quiet and mysterious and wise and way too many 'ands'. George Holly was super eccentric - like a stereotypical American.

My expression was withering. "Would you eat a shark?"
"In California we do."
WHO EATS SHARKS?! I then did my research and it turns out some people in America do eat sharks.

I disliked Matthew Malvern from start to finish. Mutt is such a fitting nickname.

I wasn't too enthusiastic about the horses. Yeah...

Also wasn't that enthusiastic about the romance.

However, the writing was absolutely beautiful and the description was on point (there was tasty food too!).

Recommendation: For 15 year olds and above. Definitely for horse/animal lovers.

Content: Mild language. Innuendo. Mild details of violence?

Rating: *** -Three stars out of five.

  1. *flails because I love this book so much* That's interesting that you weren't 100% on board with the romance because it's one of the few romances I've actually cheered for (I'm not the romance-y type, usually I'm like JUST GO FIGHT THE ZOMBIES ALREADY STOP KISSING YOU LOSERS). And the food. THE FOOD. I'm basically in love with the romance and the food in this book. Thanks for your review, it's good to see someone who wasn't totally in love with this book (usually people just flail (like me)). Other perspectives are awesome :D

    1. Ah, so you liked the romance? I felt that they should have just stayed as friends. Yeah, I liked the food. A blogger made a November Cakes recipe. Hm... maybe I should try it out.

Yeah, it's good to see other perspectives.

  2. I loved this when I read it a while ago so I'm sorry it wasn't your thing! I am a horse/animal lover as you mentioned so that may be why. I actually liked the characters. I'm with you on the gorgeous language though. And aren't you Irish? I thought maybe the capaill thing might be easier for you (I was so confused oh my gosh. I probably mispronounced it in my head the entire time). Anyway, this was a sensible review :) . And yes, George Holly was SUCH a stereotype honestly.

    1. I'm Irish but I was confused when Sean said that capall and capaill are pronounced differently. Because they're both cop-ull.

Sensible review? You praise me too much! xD

Well, at least George Holly made me laugh! xD xD xD

Keep it all clean, man. Well, if you really wanna curse, use minor swear words. And I mean the minorest of minor ones.

"Or what?" you ask in indignation.

"Or else."
