Author: Emery Lord

Genre: Romance, YA, Mental Health

Blurb: Seventeen-year-old Jonah Daniels has lived in Verona Cove, California, his whole life and only one thing has changed: his father used to be alive, and now he's not. Reeling from the tragedy, Jonah must take care of his family.

Enter Vivi Alexander, new girl in town.

Vivi is in love with life. A gorgeous, unfiltered hurricane of thoughts and feelings, she transforms Jonah's family and changes his life.

But there are always consequences when worlds collide...

Okay, so I enjoyed the beginning. I found Vivi so sweet and Jonah to be a lovely older brother to his younger siblings. He was nice, but not that nice.

"Best behaviour while I'm gone; I mean it. If I find out there was fighting, I'm going to walk back to the pottery shop and put your nail polish collection," I tell Bekah, then turn to Issac. "and your favourite books in the kiln."

Jonah, bruh. You don't threaten to burn a bookworm's books. EVEN IN KIDDING! How scandalous! How spiteful!

I liked how Vivi entered into Jonah's life with a helping hand. She took care of his younger siblings because she loved them. That touched my heart.

However... I wasn't buying the romance. First, I thought the first kiss was too sudden. Also, Vivi and Jonah had a very up and down relationship that I certainly didn't envy. It felt very lust-driven. When reading Vivi's POV, she liked to emphasise Jonah's gorgeousness way too many times. I'm just glad she liked his personality as well.

"Jonah Daniels." she says my full name as she often does, only this time with a whisper. She's shaking her head. "I don't deserve you."
I agree. 90%.

I appreciated how this story was not some dumb summer romance as we could also see how Jonah handled the grief of his father's death as well as the burden of taking care of his younger siblings which was a responsibility he shared with his two elder siblings.

Soon, Vivi started to infuriate me. She was unnecessarily careless at time and her inability to apologise and opting to seduce Jonah to avoid confrontation made me feel a bit like Naomi (Jonah's elder sister); hesitant to like Vivi (though I still dislike her).

But of course, her mental health was in bad shape so she did despicable things without fully being in her right mind. But (spoiler: I just wish she told Jonah she had bi-polar disorder, gosh darn it. Of course, I didn't like Vivi at the end of the book but at least I understood her).

Three more things to appreciate:

1. The POVs don't sound similar. You can really tell them apart! Yay!

2. Racial diversity. Both an officer and one of Vivi's friends in her old city are Japanese.

3. Jonah's platonic relationship with Ellie was preserved #boysandgirlscanbefriends

Recommendation: For those who like complicated romances.

  1. I LOVE IT when boys and girls are just friends! Why doesn't this happen. Of course, this doesn't very accurately represent my life because I have very few close boy friends (Although a lot of less close ones) but I'm just weird (maybe. probably). I'm in the middle of How Hard Can Love be? and although I like the main characters and plot, I hate how much they drink. Like it doesn't add anything to the plot and it's just stupid, because Lottie and Amber and Evie are so awesome and they're just being dumb. gajgjghraahjkrhkal (that was a frustrated growl btw)

    1. ME TOOO. (In real life I'm actually more awkward around girls than boys. Bullying really messed things up :(). I don't really have any friends in real life but thank God for internet ones! What do you mean by maybe you're just weird?

Oh. I thought you finished the Spinster Club series but maybe that was Shanti (I'm sorry, sorry, sorry! :))). Yeah, I like the book but Amber really annoyed me in it. Yes. I forgot to write that in my review I've prepared (ah, well!) but YES! They're not even allowed. Just one more flippin' year and then they can drink. And why do they always drink until they're drunk? So stupid!

That was a brilliant growl xD

  2. Hmm, this sounds really interesting, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to take the romance or not. Complicated romances sometimes irritate me; it depends on why their complicated.

Thanks for the in-depth review though!

    1. Yeah, I almost regretted reading this but at least it had a good representation of a Mental Health disorder.

      Thank you!

  3. Man, I love it how boys and girls can just be friends sometimes. It makes me very happy :) However the romance sounds a bit annoying, so not sure about that :/

Keep it all clean, man. Well, if you really wanna curse, use minor swear words. And I mean the minorest of minor ones.

"Or what?" you ask in indignation.

"Or else."
