I have returned.

You might be wondering, "Grace, why did you go off on an unexplained hiatus like the irresponsible newly-adult that you are?"

Well... I kinda fell into a slump. You see, wait you know what? I'll explain it in an April post if I remember. I'll rant my heart out. And man do I have so many reviews to write out :(( But no more talk about this. This post is about everyone's beloved Six of Crows.

Now I shall return to the review in a 3...

Author: Leigh Bardugo

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Adventure

Blurb: Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim it, he'll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist.

Break into the notorious Ice Court
(a military stronghold that has never been breached)

Retrieve a hostage
(who could unleash magical havoc on the world)

Survive long enough to collect his reward
(and spend it)

Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get this job done - and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable - if they don't kill each other first.

As many have stated, this book was better than Shadow and Bone. Much, much better. (okay, in my opinion)

The hype was real, though. However, I'm not really mad that this particular book is overhyped.

Now I'm going to be honest: I had no flippin clue about what was happening in the first 100+ pages.

A reviewer claimed that this book was bland. I agree that there is a certain blandness to it compared to Shadow and Bone but I felt that this book needed to be bland and that it got to the point quicker?

Also...

NO ONE TOLD ME THIS WAS GOING TO BE GRAPHIC! SAINTS!

Kaz wiped the knife clean, returned it to his sleeve, and drove his gloved fingers into Oomen's eye socket. He shrieked and twitched as Kaz yanked out his eyeball, its base trailing a bloody root. Blood gushed over his face.

Y'all gotta experience the torture I felt when I first read this. It's only fair :)

The novel cracked me up sometimes.

The others just looked amused, smirking at the poor backward Fjerdan. Brum had warned Matthias that the world was full of liars, pleasure seekers, faithless heathens.

It sounds somewhat familiar though.

One of the things I really liked about this story was the multiple POVs for different characters. I liked seeing how different people's minds worked.

My favourite character was Nina. I liked how sassy and witty she was. I definitely disapproved of her at times, like Matthias did but (not because she was Grisha). In second place was Inej. I wanted to know if her beliefs clashed with the life she lead. I also liked Matthias. It's quite funny because I usually like the male characters the most.

Two characters I didn't like were Kaz and Jesper. I wasn't so fond of Kaz because he was somewhat evil? He was a very interesting character but nevertheless... evil. And Jesper? I just wished he would stop talking half the time. I get the impression that he thinks he's funny but he really ruddy isn't the least bit comical.

I thought the plot was pretty good. I do however, feel that this story needed a little something extra to make it much better. I lacked a lot of emotion while reading this.

I didn't have a problem with the romance (for once) if you can call it that. It felt very minimal, just the way I like it. I felt that Nina and her love interest suited each other really well. As for Inej and Kaz...

People are gonna fight me on this but can you even call that love?

Recommendation: 15+

Content: Violence, language, references to 'pleasure houses', nudity?

3 1/2 stars out of 5

  1. Hi Grace! It's so nice that you're back *waves* . I really need to read Six of Crows because I've heard so much about it. But also the graphic violence doesn't sound that fun. I've never watched a horror movie because I already get scared by things and I just would not cope, haha.

    1. Thanks *waves*

Ah. I think you might like it more than me, though xD

Same. Horror movies are just ew. I saw the trailer for The Human Centipede when I was younger and that was enough to stay away from all things horror. The only 'horror' I liked was Goosebumps by R.L. Stine. But I guess they're more thriller than horror.

  2. Hi Grace, welcome back! I really like 6 of Crows, but Crooked Kingdom is better. Matthias is so lovely. I think the plot was a bit lacking, but still exciting with all the magic. The world is just so dynamic. Anyway, lovely reveiw, I'm glad you liked it more or less.

Keep it all clean, man. Well, if you really wanna curse, use minor swear words. And I mean the minorest of minor ones.

"Or what?" you ask in indignation.

"Or else."
