Is Contemporary YA Really My Favourite Genre?

February 03, 2018

Hi, guys! I know it's been a while (I'm also aware that I haven't been gone for that long) . I've also noticed that some new followers have joined. Hello... I guess...

So basically, after reading more books than I ever had last year I began to think about my treading tastes. Often, I would see fellow bloggers and also BookTubers gushing over their favourite genres and authors and I couldn't help but get jealous.

As I mentioned in this post, I didn't get any new favourite authors. Maybe it's because I used to just read basically anything before starting a blog and getting Goodreads. I didn't watch BookTube or even knew about the bookish blogosphere back then. Even then, Geek Girl was my favourite book series and I think that was part of  the reason why I had such a high regard of the genre. Also, I used to read on Wattpad and I felt that those Contemporaries were really good. However, there aren't many books like them that are traditionally published? So it can be harder to access them.

Now, especially this year, after reading two contemporaries, I realised that spending a long time to read 200+ or 300+ page books, I would get sick of the characters. I'm currently reading a Contemporary book (Keep The Faith, which is the sequel to Have a Little Faith) and I literally read and reviewed last year but now I'm getting sick of it.

(I'm also taking my time to finish it because I don't want to start Always and Forever Lara Jean just yet!)

I've noticed that I have my preferences: I generally tend to like Contemporary UKYA over Contemporary American YA and I even want to start reading Contemporary Australian YA this year. I want to see different types of Contemporary books before deciding whether to ditch the idea of Contemporary being my fave.

I've mentioned a couple of time that I would like to read a lot more Fantasy and other genres this year. I personally think that there's a high chance of Literary Fiction becoming my new favourite genre but I have a lot more books to read before that is confirmed!

Now for you guys. Have any of you freaked out over a favourite genre? If not, I still want to know your favourite genre(s) and why you like it so much.

  1. I go back and forth between general fiction, fantasy, and thrillers. I also like science fiction every now and then.

    Genres are so much fun!

  2. That's really interesting! I personally definitely prefer UKYA and OZYA over american, just because I generally think it's better/more relatable/ has less people in a typical american high school that I haven't attended. But sci-fi (at least good scifi ) is my favourite genre. I hope you enjoy more fantasy (read Sabriel, please <3 )

  3. I can't say I really have a preferred genre? I basically read anything and everything, which I suppose is both good and bad. It's interesting to hear how your favourite genres have kind of changed a bit over the past few years. Thanks for sharing!

  5. oh yeah I have definitely stressed over deciding on what genre is my favourite before. I think contemporary is probably my fave, both literary and YA, but I've realised that it doesn't matter as long as I'm reading and enjoying books.

  6. Hii, Grace!!
I've been where you're at. I began reading in 2012 when I was 11 years old and the book that got me into reading was The Hunger Games. And for about two complete years I only read dystopia and science fiction and contemporary YA. Until one day I realized I actually didn't like thos genres. And it took my a long time to get there hahahah.
My favourite genre is fantasy, though I do love historical fiction as well. I read contemporary as well, but i don't like all contemporary, so i have a thorough selection xD.
Anyway, i hope you get to explore more genres and authors this year and you discover which books are the ones that truly speak to you.
And if you need a recommendation, you know where i am!!
    Kisses!!!

    1. Helloooo!

Whoa, I never realised you were younger than me! I thought you were about twenty something.

Ah, I see what you mean. Those genres were really accessible at that time xD

Yes, I'll try to ask for recommendations when I need them!

  7. It's always interesting to watch how one's preferences change over the years! My favorite used to be historical and mystery and I couldn't stand contemporary. But around the time I was 14, I read a few contemporaries (Mindblind by Jennifer Roy and some of Sarah Dessen's), and fell head over heels for the genre. Honestly, I'm not sure what my all-time favorite genre is (probably spec-fic in general, sci-fi, fantasy, the whole shebang), but it's certainly interesting to examine one's reading's tastes and how one's favorites change.

I'm not super good at book recommendations because I feel like it's hard to know what people will like. :p But I'm reading The Mapmakers trilogy by S. E. Grove (a very hard to explain spec-fic), and I really like it!

      Those genres seem pretty fascinating.

Thanks for the book recommendation as well.

Keep it all clean, man. Well, if you really wanna curse, use minor swear words. And I mean the minorest of minor ones.

"Or what?" you ask in indignation.

"Or else."
